AEMO Services Limited, acting as the NSW Consumer Trustee, has launched its sixth competitive tender under the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap. The tender seeks proposals for up to 1GW of long duration energy storage projects across New South Wales.
The tender is open to projects that can connect to either new infrastructure in Renewable Energy Zones with Access Schemes or existing infrastructure across the state. To be eligible, projects must be capable of dispatching at their registered capacity for at least eight hours.
The targeted timeline is for selected projects to be operational by 2034, contributing to NSW’s energy storage goals of 2 GW and 16 GWh by 2030, and at least 28 GWh by 2034.
AEMO Services Executive General Manager Nevenka Codevelle said the success of the previous tender round sets a strong foundation for this one.
“Tender 5 was the most successful long duration energy storage tender to date. It demonstrates the strong market interest to invest in long duration storage projects and we’re excited to see more in Tender 6,” she said.
“AEMO Services uses a two-stage tender process that assesses a project’s social licence commitments, deliverability, impact on the grid and quality of proponent. The second assesses a project’s financial value to NSW electricity consumers.
“We want to see more short lead time projects that contribute to our 2030 minimum objective. With the recent addition of a new minimum objective of at least 28 GWh by 2034, we are now able to support projects with a longer lead time that will come online in the next decade,” Codevelle added.
Since the start of the Roadmap, AEMO Services has supported projects expected to deliver more than 2.4GW of generation, 18GWh of long duration energy storage, and nearly 3GWh of firming capacity to the state’s grid.
Project bids for Tender 6 close on 10 June 2025. Further information, including eligibility and merit criteria, is available on the AEMO Services website.
