ANDRITZ and Slovak engineering company VUJE have secured a contract to modernise the 720MW Gabčíkovo hydropower plant on the Danube in Slovakia.
The contract, awarded by VODOHOSPODÁRSKA VÝSTAVBA, covers the renewal and modernisation of the plant’s electromechanical equipment. ANDRITZ said the order is valued in the mid-three-digit million-euro range and was included in its order intake for the third quarter of 2026.
All eight Kaplan turbine-generator units will be refurbished and upgraded to current technical standards. The work is intended to improve the plant’s efficiency and availability while extending the service life of its main operating equipment by at least 30 years.
The scope includes model testing, engineering, manufacturing, installation and commissioning, as well as the modernisation of key turbine and generator components. Automation, excitation, protection and control systems will also be upgraded, while transformers and auxiliary electrical systems will be renewed.
Work will be carried out sequentially to allow the remaining units to continue operating and minimise disruption to generation.
Gabčíkovo is Slovakia’s largest hydropower facility and accounts for approximately 10% of the country’s electricity production.
