Iceland’s Landsvirkjun has signed an agreement with ANDRITZ Hydro GmbH for the supply of four replacement stators for Búrfell hydropower station, completing a programme to replace stators across all six generating units.

ANDRITZ will design, manufacture and deliver the four stators and supervise their installation. The work will take place over the next four years, with completion scheduled for the first half of 2030.

The total cost of replacing the four stators is approximately ISK2.3bn (US$18.9m), with the stators themselves accounting for the largest share of expenditure.

The first stator in the current replacement programme was installed in 2023, while a second is due to be installed this winter. Contracts for those two phases were previously awarded to other companies.

Búrfell hydropower plant began operating in 1969, and its stators were first replaced towards the end of the last century.

ANDRITZ has previously supplied equipment for several Landsvirkjun stations, including Sultartangi, Búrfell II and Fljótsdalur.
