Organised by the electric-power-research-institute and the US Department of Energy, in cooperation with the Army Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Reclamation and the national-hydropower-association, attendees to the workshop will offer speakers and attendees the opportunity to learn about the history of advanced turbine development, the current state of the art in advanced turbine designs, turbine performance testing procedures and tools, relevant biological considerations, demonstration projects, and future directions.

The workshop will be comprised of invited and contributed papers. Abstracts received will be reviewed by a steering committee comprising industry experts and conference sponsors. Presentations that best address the workshop objectives will be selected for presentation. Selection results will be announced on or before 15 February 2011. The conference organizers intend to publish the proceedings of the workshop and technical papers will be requested for all invited and selected presentations.

Abstracts are now being accepted for presentations associated with the following topics:

• Equipment and technologies: fish-friendly turbine designs; aerating turbine designs.

• Biological impacts: laboratory studies (e.g injury mechanisms); field studies; study techniques/technologies.

• Future applications and directions: market prospects; potential sites; pumped storage applications; cost of energy.

• Case studies

Please submit abstracts of 300 words or less using the following web site: Submissions should include the presentation title, names of the presenter and co-authors, and complete contact information. At a minimum, papers on new turbines should describe the design, energy efficiency, and expected environmental performance. The deadline for abstract submittal is 7 January 2011.
