The Shangyi Pumped Storage Power Station in Shangyi County has completed two major construction milestones: the closure of its lower reservoir for water storage and the successful installation of the rotor for Unit 1.
The rotor, weighing 372 tons with a diameter of 5.45m and a height of 3.39m, is the heaviest component in the unit installation process. Its hoisting marks the final major installation step before full assembly. Engineers from the Beijing Institute of Surveying and Design reviewed the lifting plan in detail, implemented safety measures, and ensured accurate placement of the rotor.
The lower reservoir includes a sediment retention reservoir, a weir, inlet and outlet structures, and a flood discharge tunnel. The project passed water storage acceptance on August 22 after a series of inspections covering design, construction quality, and safety. The closure of the reservoir now allows water storage to begin as planned.
With these milestones completed, the project moves into the commissioning stage. The first generating unit is expected to begin operation soon, marking a step toward full-scale electricity generation.
The Shangyi Pumped Storage Power Station has a planned installed capacity of 1400MW. Once operational, it will provide peak shaving, frequency regulation, phase control, and emergency backup for the Beijing-Tianjin and northern Hebei power grids. The facility is expected to improve grid stability and support regional energy transition goals.
