Increasing levels of silt and sediment are reported to be lowering capacity at dams across Saudi Arabia. According to reports from the Saudi Press Agency, the Prince Sultan Institute for Environment, Water and Desert Research has suggested that poor maintenance has contributed to the problem and may affect the facilities’ operation during extreme flood events.
The institute went on to add that global warming is influencing the climate of the Arabian Peninsula, with annual rainfall expected to increase by 25-30%.
