A pipeline is used as a conduit to transport slurry, i.e. a mixture of solids and fluids, within the mining industry, at chemical plants, etc. The design of such pipelines requires the hydraulic performance of the transport of slurry in these pipelines. One of the main design parameters is the critical flow velocity, which is the minimum velocity to maintain solid particles in a suspended condition. The existing equations for critical velocity have been checked for their accuracy using collected data from literature, and finally a new equation has been proposed in this paper. The proposed equation is superior to the existing equations in the determination of critical velocity. Furthermore, the proposed equation requires only the settling velocity of solid particles in clear water and not in the slurry.
