The Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) and ORTA ASYA Investment Holding have announced a partnership to implement major hydropower projects in Kyrgyzstan.

The two sides signed an agreement to work together on a feasibility study for the Suusamyr-Kokomeren hydropower plant cascade project, which is being financed by the EDB.

ORTA ASYA Investment Holding is leading the construction of the Suusamyr-Kokomeren and Kazarman cascades under an investment agreement with the Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan. The projects are valued at more than $6 billion.

According to the partners, the new hydropower plants will raise Kyrgyzstan’s installed energy capacity by more than 50%. The additional output is expected to cover growing domestic electricity demand and enable exports.

The EDB is one of the first international financial institutions to support ORTA ASYA Investment Holding’s energy projects in the country. The Suusamyr-Kokomeren project is part of the EDB’s “Central Asian Water and Energy Complex,” its flagship regional investment initiative.

Further details on Kyrgyzstan’s water and energy sector and the potential effects of new hydropower construction are available in the EDB’s analytical report, Regulation of the Central Asian Water and Energy Complex.
