The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has selected international technology group ANDRITZ to modernise the pumped storage units at the Srinagarind hydropower plant in Kanchanaburi province.

The contract covers the replacement of two 180MW pump turbine units, including motor generators, electromechanical equipment, and auxiliaries. ANDRITZ will handle the supply, installation, and commissioning of the new systems. The project, valued in the mid double-digit million-euro range, will be included in ANDRITZ’s order intake for the second quarter of 2025.

Srinagarind is one of Thailand’s largest hydropower plants, located on the Kwai Yai River. It has a total capacity of 720MW from three Francis units and two pumped storage units. The plant provides base load power, peak load coverage, and grid balancing for Thailand’s electricity network. ANDRITZ previously modernised the plant’s Francis units in an earlier project.

ANDRITZ said the modernisation “will ensure efficient and reliable operation of the pumped storage units for many years to come,” reinforcing Srinagarind’s importance in Thailand’s power system.

The company plans to use its manufacturing facilities in India and global engineering network to deliver the project.

EGAT operates more than 50 power plants across Thailand with a total installed capacity exceeding 16,000MW and is involved in energy ventures abroad.

ANDRITZ has been active in Thailand for over 50 years and has contributed to nearly half of the country’s hydropower capacity through new installations and upgrades. The company said this repeat order “underlines ANDRITZ’s strong position in the Thai hydropower market and highlights its commitment to delivering innovative, sustainable energy solutions that support Thailand’s renewable energy goals.”
