The Salahmi hydroelectric project in Finland has been successfully refurbished, with a double-regulated Mavel Z Kaplan turbine having been commissioned in the spring. System integrator VEO Oy worked with Mavel to complete the project in less than 12 months from the signing of the equipment contract to commissioning.
The upgrade of the 1MW project, located in Vierema, Northern Savonia, included the use of the existing penstock and provided a state-of-the-art turnkey solution. Mavel’s double-regulated Kaplan Z turbine KZ1310K5 was chosen to replace the plant’s existing smaller turbine. With five blades and a 1310mm runner diameter, the Kaplan Z was ideal for handling the site’s 12.5m head. Mavel’s scope also included the generator, hydraulic power unit and installation services.
Streamlined production ensured that the project was operational within a year, causing minimal disruption. At the refurbished project, flow regulation can be adjusted from 20% to 100%, allowing Salahmi to operate with the natural flow of the watercourse.
