Tomorrow, 11 October, marks Global Hydropower Day, an international celebration recognising the positive impacts of sustainable hydropower on people and communities around the world.
Led by the International Hydropower Association (IHA), and supported by a global coalition of developers, operators, manufacturers and industry associations, the day will shine a light on the power that can be harnessed through sustainable hydropower.
Hydropower is the oldest form of renewable energy, and it continues to play a key role alongside other clean energy technologies in the world’s journey towards a net zero future. By providing stability, flexibility and energy storage, hydropower supports the integration of variable renewables such as wind and solar, helping to build resilient and low-carbon energy systems.
Global Hydropower Day is an opportunity to recognise the communities, organisations and individuals working to advance hydropower’s contribution to sustainable development and climate action.
As the IHA leads the global campaign, people and organisations around the world are encouraged to join the conversation and show their support for hydropower’s role in a cleaner energy future by using the hashtag #GlobalHydropowerDay.
Hydropower has powered communities for generations — and as the world transitions to a net zero future, it remains a cornerstone of sustainable progress.
