An established 1.022MW run-of-river hydropower scheme in the Scottish Highlands has been brought to market, with Feed-in Tariff (FiT) support secured until December 2033.
The Allt Doe hydro scheme is located on the Glendoe Estate near Fort Augustus, on the south-east shore of Loch Ness. Commissioned in December 2013, the scheme has an average annual generation of 2.52GWh and is forecast to deliver an operating profit of approximately £700,000 in 2027.
The plant has an installed capacity of 1022kW and is equipped with two Gilkes turbines. The principal G1 turbine has recently been refurbished, while the smaller G2 turbine allows continued electricity generation during periods of lower river flows.
Calum Innes, Partner at independent property advisers Galbraith, said: “This is a productive hydro scheme with capacity in excess of 1MW and a proven track record. The scheme benefits from a substantial period of entitlement to Government support from the Feed-in Tariff scheme. The principal turbine has been recently refurbished and the presence of an additional smaller turbine allows continued generation when flows are reduced.”
The scheme is managed by Green Highland Renewables, which provides monthly inspections and remote diagnostic monitoring. The sale is proposed on the basis of a 30-year leasehold at a peppercorn rent.
According to the sales information, the asset may appeal to existing hydropower investors looking to expand their portfolios, family offices seeking an income-generating renewable energy asset, or electricity users interested in securing their own renewable power supply.
Part of the electricity generated is supplied locally through private-wire arrangements, with the potential for additional revenue by selling power at above-wholesale rates.
