The energy utility said it urged the Government to de-couple the proposed Renewable Energy Target (RET) legislation to speed implementation. It added, in a statement, that ‘timing is now critical’ for the strategic move.
Under the RET law, 20% of the country’s electricity would be generated from renewable sources by 2020.
The Senate Economics Committee reported that all parties support rapid introduction of the RET legislation, Hydro Tasmania said.
However, the RET law is being put through with the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, which the Senate voted down.
The utility has a raft of projects planned under the expanded RET rules, such as modernisation projects and also wind energy schemes.
The Senate Economics Committee recommended that the target be reviewed, and possibly increased, in 2014 to keep the goal on track.
