French renewable energy developer HYVITY has selected HYDROGRID to support the feasibility and development of a 450MW closed-loop pumped storage hydropower (PSH) project in Chile.

HYVITY will use HYDROGRID’s simulation platform, HYDROGRID Insight, to test investment scenarios and assess how the project can integrate with nearby renewable energy resources.

“HYDROGRID Insight adds an additional layer of data-backed intelligence that will enable us to better valorize our energy and avoid significant curtailment introduced by other renewables in the region,” HYVITY said in a statement.

Chile has seen rapid growth in solar PV capacity, with prices falling close to zero during daytime hours. This has created challenges for grid stability and renewable energy producers. Pumped storage projects are being developed to provide flexible energy supply, reduce curtailment, and improve system reliability.

HYDROGRID Insight’s Investment Decision Simulation will allow HYVITY to:

  • Align with regional energy needs: Model production and demand patterns to tailor the project for maximum system value.
  • Reduce risk and improve returns: Identify curtailment risks and revenue potential to inform investment strategies.
  • Compare hardware options: Test turbine and pump setups to select the most efficient and cost-effective design.

The collaboration will be presented at the International Forum on Pumped Storage Hydropower in Paris later this month. HYVITY and HYDROGRID teams will share details of the Chilean project and highlight how simulation tools can improve project design and integration.
