This increase will be largely due to the planned start-up of new projects, following huge investment by the country’s government in the Northeastern region, says the research report ‘Indian Power Sector Analysis’. New projects funded by the government are expected to contribute 14,000MW of electricity by 2017.

The report found that only about 910MW of hydropower has been commissioned in the private sector, constituting less than 3% of the total installed hydropower capacity. It states that Himachal Pradesh has the largest capacity in terms of small hydro power potential followed by Uttaranchal, J&K, Arunachal Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The study has also found that India currently has huge power requirement and the supply may not be adequate over the coming years.
