Tohoku Electric Power has resumed commercial operation at its 3MW Tsukimoushi hydropower plant in Tono, Iwate Prefecture, Japan, following the completion of repowering work that began in June 2023.

The project replaced the plant’s equipment, consolidated two turbine generators into one and changed the equipment operating system from hydraulic to electric power. Tohoku Electric expects the changes to reduce maintenance requirements and equipment failures, shortening downtime. It estimates that improved turbine generator efficiency will increase annual electricity generation by approximately 6%.

The Tsukimoushi hydropower plant began operating in 1931. Tohoku Electric said the overhaul was undertaken to support stable generation and make more effective use of its water resources as the facility ages.
