The reservoir impoundment ceremony for the Nam Mo 2 Hydropower Project was held on 10 January 2026 in northern Laos, marking the project’s transition into its final construction and operational preparation phase.
The event was attended by representatives of the Government and local authorities of the Lao PDR, state regulatory agencies, the project owner, SCI Group as EPC contractor, along with consultants, partners and subcontractors. Attendance reflected continued institutional support for the project during its implementation.
Prior to impoundment, the project management board completed all required legal approvals and technical conditions in line with national regulations. Coordination was also carried out with local authorities to implement information and notification programmes for communities located upstream and downstream of the dam, with a focus on safety during the reservoir filling process.
The Nam Mo 2 reservoir has a normal operating level of 1305m and a minimum operating level of 1287.5m. Total storage capacity is 80.03 million cubic metres, including 67.93 million cubic metres of active storage. Construction of the headworks was completed in accordance with approved designs, and hydromechanical gate systems have passed dry testing, meeting technical requirements for impoundment.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Bui Chi Giang, representing SCI Group, said the impoundment marked an important technical and organisational milestone, reflecting coordination between the project owner, contractor and stakeholders under the oversight of government authorities.
The impoundment is a prerequisite for commissioning and planned operation of the hydropower plant. Once operational, the project is expected to contribute to electricity supply stability and support local economic development.
