Cambodia’s largest hydropower plant – the 338MW Russei Chrum Krom project – has officially begun operations.

The project, located in the southwestern Koh Kong province, was built by China Huadian Corp, with the Chinese state-owned firm set to operate the dam for 35 years before turning it over to the Cambodian government.

The project took almost five years to build a cost of about $500 million, newswires reported.

It was officially inaugurated yesterday by Prime Minister Hun Sen in a ceremony attended by the Chinese ambassador.
