With the client, Verbund-Austrian Hydro Power, in attendance the manufacturer successfully completed a 10-day programme of model test for the 240MW pump turbines.

In a statement, Voith Siemens said the design of the pump turbines was particularly challenging as the units will have to deal with head levels varying between 288m-436m, due to variation in the levels in the storage lakes that feed from a reservoir of more than 80Mm3.

Limberg II is being built as the latest addition to the Kaprun hydro system and as a pumped storage plant it will supply about 10% of grid needs during peak demand in the country.

Voith Siemens contract to design, manufacture, supply and install the two pump turbine units is valued at Euro33M. With manufacture now underway, the first unit is scheduled to be commissioned by late 2011.
