Hydro Tasmania’s mainland Australian electricity retail business, Momentum Energy, has appointed Michael Briggs as its new Chief Executive Officer, with his tenure due to begin in November 2026.

Briggs joins from Australian energy company AGL, where he has served as Program Director for Telco Transformation. He brings more than 20 years of executive experience across large consumer businesses in Australia and overseas, spanning strategy, customer experience, sales, marketing and operations.

Hydro Tasmania CEO Rachel Watson said Briggs would guide Momentum Energy through its next phase of growth and development.

“Michael brings extensive experience in customer-focused businesses and a strong track record of delivering commercial outcomes and organisational transformation,” said Ms Watson.

“We are delighted to welcome Michael to Momentum Energy and the Hydro Tasmania group. His leadership, energy and customer-first approach will play an important role in shaping Momentum’s future.”

Briggs said he looked forward to leading the business and supporting customers through the energy transition.

“I’m excited to be joining Momentum Energy and helping our customers navigate the transition to a cleaner energy future,” said Briggs. “Momentum is committed to making a positive difference for customers while working towards emissions-free electricity and I’m looking forward to working alongside the team to bring that ambition to life for our customers and communities.”

Watson also thanked interim CEO Danny Moore for leading the business during the recruitment process. Moore will continue to support the handover over the coming months.

“Danny has provided outstanding leadership and stability during this transition period, and his continued support over coming months will help ensure a smooth handover,” she said.
