A consortium led by ABB alstom Power has received a US$325M order from the Electrobras subsidiary, Electronorte, for phase II of the Tucurui hydroelectric power plant in Brazil. The other members of the consortium are Odebrecht, Inepar-Fern and ge-hydro Inepar. ABB Alsthom’s share of the order is worth US$175M.
Phase II, financed by Electrobras and BNDES, will add 3670MW of additional generating capacity at the 4250MW plant, currently the fourth largest in the world. This phase covers the supply, erection and commissioning of 11x380MW units as well as intake gates, penstocks, stop-logs for draft tubes, cranes, protection and control systems and insulated busbars. The new units, which will be manufactured in Brazil at ABB Alstom’s Tabauté factory, are scheduled to enter commercial operation at the beginning of 2003.
Tucurui’s phase II will have minimal environmental impact as the new power house is being constructed alongside the existing one, and will use the same reservoir.
