4 September 2014

Alstom T&D India is to supply power transformers (4x180MW) for the 720MW Mangdechhu hydroelectric project in Bhutan's Trongsa district in a €7 million contract awarded by Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project Authority (MHPA)

Under the terms of the deal, Alstom T&D India will supply thirteen units of 75 MVA, 400 kV generator transformers and an 80 MVAR, 400 kV shunt reactor. Alstom will design, engineer, manufacture, supply, transport, erect, test and commission the generator transformer, shunt reactor and associated equipment for the project. All equipment will be supplied from Alstom T&D India's manufacturing facility in Naini.

According to the Central Electricity Authority of India, Bhutan has an enormous hydropower potential of approximately 25,000 MW. The Government of India and Royal Government of Bhutan have agreed to develop the hydropower sector in the country, targeting 10,000MW of hydroelectric generation by 2020. Alstom's power transformers will evacuate the hydro power generated by the Mangdechhu Hydroelectric project.

“Alstom T&D India is pleased to contribute to an ambitious hydropower development plan, and help establish a robust electrical grid for Bhutan with its latest technological products," said Rathin Basu, Managing Director of Alstom T&D India.
