DaTang Guanyinyan Hydropower Development Co. Ltd is part of the China Datang Corporation, one of China’s top five power generation groups. This is alstom’s second contract with the company following the PengShui hydropower project in 2004, for which Alstom supplied five 350MW Francis turbine generator units.

“This contract demonstrates the faith that Chinese customers are placing in our advanced technology,” said Philippe Cochet, Senior Vice President, alstom-hydro and Wind. “China has enormous potential for the expansion of hydropower and Alstom is glad to be supporting this growth with its clean power solutions.”

Hydropower accounts for 22% of China’s electricity generation capacity and is expanding at a rate of 15GW per year. Over 110 new hydro projects are currently in the planning stage, to be completed by 2020.

Alstom is heavily involved in China’s hydro market. To date, the company has signed contracts for hydro turbines and generators in China covering 45GW, out of which approximately 28 GW are already in commercial operation. Key projects include Three Gorges Dam, to which Alstom supplied 14 units of 700MW each, XiaJiang (five 40MW units), Li Yuan (four 600MW units) and Xianjiaba (four 800MW units). The 800MW turbines designed, engineered and manufactured by Alstom for Xianjiaba are the world’s largest hydro turbines ever manufactured to date.

On 4 November, Alstom inaugurated its new hydropower manufacturing facility at Tianjin in China, Alstom Hydro China Co. Ltd (AHC) With a total area of nearly 250,000 square metres, the site is capable of delivering up to 30 turbine and generator units per year with outputs ranging from 20MW to 1000MW.
