Alstom wins supply contract on Lower Mattagami project

8 July 2010

Under the contract, Alstom will supply three hydro turbine generator sets at the new Smoky Falls Generating Station that will replace the existing station significantly optimizing water utilization. When installed, the new turbine generators will have a combined capacity of 267MW. Smoky Falls Generating Station is one of four stations to be redeveloped as part of OPG’s C$2.6B Lower Mattagami Project.

Alstom will provide a complete turnkey package for the project, including installation and commissioning of the units, which is planned for the end of 2013. Core components such as turbine runners and generator bars will be manufactured at Alstom’s facility in Sorel-Tracy, Quebec, into which Alstom has invested heavily in recent years to address the growing North American hydro market.

With a long history of experience in Canada, Alstom has been involved in many other projects such as Pine Falls (Manitoba Hydro), Shipshaw Unit 5 (Rio Tinto Alcan), R.H. Saunders (OPG), and recently signed a contract with Hydro-Québec for La Romaine II.

KAP – the Lower Mattagami project’s design build contractor - is a partnership between construction firms Peter Kiewit & Sons Co. (Kiewit) and Leo Alarie and Sons Construction Ltd, a subsidiary of the Aecon Infrastructure Group. The JV was awarded the design-build contract, valued at $1.7B, early last month.
