Global sustainable development consultancy Arup and ILF Consulting Engineers have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at strengthening pumped storage projects in the UK. These projects include Coire Glas, Glenmuckloch, and up to 13 additional schemes in the pipeline.

This partnership marks a significant development in the hydropower sector in the UK, bringing both capacity and valuable experience to support the country's net-zero energy transition.

According to Dan Saville, Energy, Water and Resources Leader at Arup UKIMEA: "Arup and ILF have a strong record of design excellence for major projects, and a tried and tested relationship working collaboratively on challenging projects. We are excited to continue working with ILF in developing a portfolio of major hydropower projects including supporting current contracts for, Glenmuckloch Pumped Storage OE role and the Coire Glas Strabag bid."

The collaboration between Arup and ILF combines Scottish project delivery with expertise in hydropower. Arup's experience in delivering major projects in Scotland, such as the Queensferry Crossing, offers valuable insights into funding, consenting, delivery, and operational resilience for projects of this scale.

ILF Consulting Engineers also bring a wealth of experience from working on complex hydropower schemes worldwide, including projects in Switzerland, Germany, Luxembourg, Canada, and Dubai. Their expertise extends to operators for similar or larger-sized pumped storage schemes, ensuring that scheme development prioritizes ease and resilience in operation and maintenance planning.

Josef Mayr, Managing Director of ILF Consulting Engineers Austria, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating: " We are thrilled to embark on this collaborative journey with Arup. Their expertise and track record align seamlessly with our own vision and capabilities. Together, we aim to bring innovative solutions to the hydropower UK market, setting new standards in sustainable energy. This collaboration signifies not only the cooperation of two companies, but a collective commitment to driving positive change in the UK renewable energy landscape. We are eager to foster this relationship and look forward to the accomplishments it will undoubtedly bring."
