AWARDS

• An underwater concrete foundation has won a Certificate of Excellence at the 2000 Concrete Society Awards in the UK.

The structure which was critical to the successful construction of the low level refuelling facility at Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth, is part of a much wider redevelopment programme at the dockyard. Its construction required an underwater placement of 11,000m3 of concrete within an existing cofferdam.

• CMS Cameron McKenna has made it a hat-trick when is was named as British Consultancy Firm of the Year by the British Consultants Bureau for the third year running. The law firm won the year 2000 award in conjunction with PricewaterhouseCoopers for its work on the Sofia water concession project in Bulgaria.

• Middlesex University in the UK has won a special honour for its Flood Hazard Research Centre (FHRC) in the year 2000 round of the Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for higher and further education. FHRC has been involved in environmental research and cost benefit analysis in all aspects of flood and coastal projects for over 25 years and was honoured for its work in educating communities about the flood risks they face across the UK and also internationally in countries like Bangladesh and India.

US-based Waukesha Bearings Corporation has announced the appointment of Jim Winistorfer as general manager Indus International, a provider of enterprise asset management solutions, has appointed John King as vice president/managing director for the Europe, Middle East and African operations of the company. King will manage all activities and future growth plans in these areas of the world from the new regional headquarters in Woking, UK.

Westinghouse Process Control, a subsidiary of Emerson Electric, has entered into a partnership with the Energy Research Centre at Lehigh University to optimise the operation of power facilities through the use of artificial intelligence techniques.
