Brazil and Bolivia planning new dam

27 April 2015

The Brazilian and Bolivian governments are in discussions for the development of a new 3GW hydroelectric dam on Bolivia's section of the Madeira River, newswires have reported.

Part of a package of investments in the border region funded by Brazil, the dam would likely be operated similar to Itaipu dam, which is a Brazil-Paraguay venture. Under plans being discussed, the dam could be operational in 2022, with the project supplying electricity to both countries.

The dam would reportedly optimise output from the two hydro plants already constructed on the two countries border - Jirau and Santo Antonio.
