Construction has started on the 16GW Baihetan hydropower project on China’s Jinsha River – expected to be the world’s second largest hydropower plant once complete in 2022.

Chinese media has reported that construction was launched yesterday. The scheme is located in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, and will be the fourth hydro facility on the lower Jinsha after Xiluodo, Wudongde and Xiangjiaba.

The scheme will utilize 16 x 1000MW turbines.
