Dozens dead as Kenyan dam breaches

10 May 2018

Over 30 people have been killed with many more missing after the Patel dam in Kenya breached its banks.

The incident in Solai near the city of Nakuru occurred late yesterday, and followed weeks of heavy rain in the region.

Rescue work is ongoing, with the Red Cross active in the area. Local reports suggest over 500 families have been affected by the incident.

The Standard in Kenya reported that the dam released its waters to a nearby shopping centre and the Nyakinyua farm, which borders the project. Hundreds of homes were washed away.
