Equipment suppliers form association

10 May 2001

Leading suppliers of equipment and services to hydro companies have formed an association to promote the industry in partnership with the World Commission on Dams (WCD).

The hydro-equipment-association was launched on May 1, 2001. Its members are alstom Power, voith-siemens Hydro Power Generation and va-tech-hydro. The association's chairman is Dr Hans Schiffer, of Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation.

At its launch, the association declared that it would:

•Inform the public of the advantages of hydro.

•Promote hydro as the most environmentally-friendly and renewable source of electricity.

•Represent the hydro equipment industry in dialogue following the November 2000 publication of the report of the World Commission on Dams (WCD).

•Assist in the development of standards and guidelines relating to the hydro industry.

The association plans to contact principal WCD stakeholders, such as the World Bank, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, and international funding organisations, to inform them of its objectives.
