Final Three Gorges cofferdam removed

7 June 2006

The 579m long, 140m high cofferdam was located on the southern bank of the Yangtze river and was demolished with enough explosives to bring down approximately 400 10-story buildings.

In May the last wall of the 18,200MW Three Gorges project was erected, and the scheme is scheduled to be fully operational in 2009.
