France shows an interest in Bakun

26 March 2001

Latest reports suggest that the Bakun dam in Malaysia has attracted the attention of at least four French companies.

alstom Malaysia, Lafarge Group, Sogreah and Vinci Construction have allegedly expressed interest in the project and are set to participate in the tendering exercise.

The project was shelved in 1997 due to a financial crisis in Asia. Malaysia’s Ministry of Finance took control over the scheme from Bakun Hydroelectric Corporation in 2000, and has been scaled down to a cost of US$2.4B.
