Five hydropower plants are to be upgraded in Myanmar following the approval of a €35.7 million loan from the French Development Agency (AFD), the Myanmar Times has reported.

The newspaper said that the funds will be used over the next five years for upgrades to the Ye Nwe, Mone Chaung, Zaung Tu, Kinda, and Thaphan Seik hydropower plants. All plants are expected to increase capacity.

The plants are between 10 and 30 years old and have received very little maintenance over the years, with frequent faults in the turbines, generators and control room, Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy U Tun Naing was quoted as saying.
