GE and ABB win Chinese pumped storage contract

Some US$78M will go to GE which, as the main contractor, is to supply four 250MW pump turbines and motor-generator sets, auxiliaries and services to the project, located in Yixing city.

The pump turbines will be vertical shaft, single stage, reversible Francis machines, rated at 255 –275MW. The 50Hz motor-generators will be three-phase, air-cooled, vertical shaft, suspension type, reversible synchronous units. The generator mode will have a rating of 278MVA while the motor mode will be rated at 275MW.

Delivery of equipment is to be shared between GE’s facilities in Norway, Finland and Canada, with the start of installation scheduled for 2005. The first unit is expected to start up in August 2007, with the other three scheduled to come on-line other the following 12 months.

ABB will supply a computer supervisory control system and auxiliary electrical systems.

The contract was agreed by representatives of the Jiangsu Pumped Storage Power Co. Ltd, the CETIC International Tendering Co. Ltd and GE.
