Germany covers an area of 357,000km2 and has a population of 82.1M. According to the latest update of icold’s World Register of Dams, there are 311 dams in Germany.
There are currently 5460 hydro power stations with an installed capacity of approximately 4525MW. The hydro power potential has been estimated in 1999 to 24700GWh per year. About 70% of the technically feasible hydro potential has been developed so far, and there are two new projects currently under construction.
Uprating and refurbishment of existing plants is becoming more important than new construction in the country.
