Gilkes gives update on African projects

8 December 2020

Gilkes has announced in its Winter newsletter that the Mulosa River project in Southern Malawi is progressing as scheduled with the pipeline route being laid and the construction of the powerhouse nearing completion.

The project’s powerhouse will house a 3.0MW Turgo Turbine and associated equipment supplied by Gilkes. The Turbine was assembled at Gilkes’ factory in Kendal and dispatched to Malawi on the committed ship date, despite the challenges faced during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Installation and Commissioning of the project is due for completion by the end of January 2021.

In Kenya, Gilkes long standing relationship with Kengen, the country’s argest electricity producer, continues with the latest supply of a strategic spares package for the Mesco project.

The original Mesco turbine was installed by Gilkes in 1930 and subsequently repaired following a lightning strike in 2013.  The work was the first major overhaul of the plant since its commissioning 90 years earlier.
