Hydro production affected by conflicting demands

24 January 2001

Engineers in Tanzania have said that the recent low water levels in hydro reservoirs, which led to power rationing, are the result of increased demand for irrigation and poor runoff from deteriorated watersheds.

Engineers claim that population pressures and the settlement of new farms in watersheds have resulted in environmental degradation and soil erosion, causing less runoff and sedimentation in reservoirs.
