Andrew Scanlon, a senior manager with Hydro Tasmania, has been appointed to the Board of the International Hydropower Association (IHA).

Scanlon manages Hydro Tasmania's sustainability and safety programs and is responsible for its integrated ISO 14001 and OHSAS18001 Health, Safety and Environmental Management System.

He has been involved in IHA work for more than ten years, and led the development of the IHA's Sustainability Guidelines in 2004 and its Sustainability Assessment Protocol in 2006. He was one of two industry representatives on the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Forum, a body that included representatives of environmental and social non-government organisations, financial institutions and governments. The Forum was responsible for the development in 2010 of the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol, which guides and measures performance in the hydropower sector. Scanlon is presently a member of the Protocol Governance Committee.

"The IHA works to build and share knowledge on the role of hydropower in renewable energy systems, responsible freshwater management and climate change solutions"

"It is a privilege to be appointed to the Board of such an important organization," Scanlon commented. "The IHA works with members of the hydropower industry and the broader community to assist in the delivery of high standard projects. I look forward to working with my fellow Board members in advancing sustainable hydropower."

The IHA works to build and share knowledge on the role of hydropower in renewable energy systems, responsible freshwater management and climate change solutions. It has members in more than 80 countries.

The association recently announced that it had extended its collaboration with The China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR) by renewing their cooperation agreement last week, 26 February. The agreement lays out plans for mutually beneficial work in the next two years, and the continuation of the IHA China office, which is hosted by the institute.
