Imperial hydro plant rewound

19 February 2004

THE IMPERIAL IRRIGATION DISTRICT (IID) of California, US, is set to resume commercial operation in February at one of its hydroelectric plants following a US$540,000 hydro generator rewind project carried out by GE Energy.
As part of the project, a 6.9kV stator winding manufactured by GE of Brazil was supplied and installed at the hydro plant’s Allis Chalmers generator. GE said the old stator and field poles had been tested and found to be suitable for continued duty.
Rated at 5MW, the station is one of 14 IID-operated hydro plants, totalling 84MW generation capacity, on the All American canal. Water is also transported to southern California’s Imperial Valley, where it is used for crop irrigation.
