Increasing efficiency at Northfield Mountain

AMERICAN HYDRO CORPORATION of Pennsylvania, US, has been awarded a major contract with Northeast Utilities of Connecticut for the 270MW Northfield Mountain pumped storage project in Massachusetts.

american-hydro will design, build and test an exact scale model to increase the efficiency and productivity of unit 1 which was commissioned in 1973. The main component to be replaced will be the rotating impeller.

Over the past 16 years, American Hydro has built over 325 modern replacement runners that have added 1000MW of new capacity to existing turbines worldwide. Although most of these projects have been in the US and Canada, the company has also worked in new Zealand, Africa, Latin America and Europe.
