India looks to reclassify large hydro as renewable

25 October 2016

Large hydropower projects could soon be classed as renewable energy in India as the country’s energy ministry is looking to remove a barrier that currently means only projects under 25MW fall into this category.

The ministry is reportedly seeking cabinet approval for the plan, which means large hydropower would count towards the government's renewables target, and help increase the target from 175GW by 2022 to 230GW.
