An India/Canadian consortium has been awarded a contract with the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation for the turnkey construction of the Chamera II hydroelectric development in Himachel Pradesh, India.
The consortium is led by Indian company Jaiprakasah Industries and includes, SNC Lavalin, Acres International and ge-hydro from Canada. Financing for the C$500M project is being arranged by SNC Lavalin Capital.
Located on the Ravi river, 30km upstream from Chamera I, the project requires construction of a 39m high gravity dam, four spillway bays and radial gates, two desilting chambers, a 7.9km power tunnel, a 93m high surge shaft, an underground powerhouse with three 300MW units and a 3.6km tailrace tunnel.
Jaiprakash will design and carry out civil works, supply the indigenous portion of permanent equipment and construction, as well as construct and commission the project. The SNC-Lavalin-led group of Canadian companies will design and supply the offshore component of equipment. Work is to begin immediately and is scheduled for completion in five years.
