Mavel to equip Winchie Creek project, Canada

6 June 2016

Mavel Americas, Inc is to supply a Vertical Pelton Turbine and related equipment for the Winchie Creek Hydroelectric Power Plant on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.

The company will provide a 5-jet Vertical Pelton turbine Model PV1130/5, generator, inlet valve and hydraulic power unit for the project. With a net head of 156.5m and design flow of 3m3/sec, the project is expected to have an installed capacity of 4132kW. The Pelton turbine's runner diameter will be 1130 mm and the turbine will be direct connected to a generator operating at 450 rpm.

The Winchie Creek project is located about 35 km east of Ucluelet on the west side of Vancouver Island. The project intake is located above a waterfall that acts as a barrier to salmon swimming upstream, so there will be no effect on the habitat of anadromous fish. The Winchie Creek watershed receives over 4000mm of rainfall per year.

Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation will own the project - its third hydroelectric project in the region. Barkley Project Group, based in Nanaimo, is acting as the agent for the owner and is also the project manager.

Delivery of the turbine - generator package is scheduled for next spring with commercial operation expected to begin during the summer of 2017.
