Plutonic starts to build first run-of-river schemes

19 July 2007

The schemes will have a total installed capacity of 196MW and are being built by contractor Peter Kiewit Sons Co on an engineer, procure and construct (EPC) contract. Initial work includes establishing access roads, an airstrip and construction camp in Toba Valley.

East Toba and Montrose Creek had gone through about two years of planning applications for regulatory approvals before work could start on site. Funding for the project is backed by GE Energy Financial Services.

Plutonic has 31 hydro projects in various stages, mostly in planning and seeking early stage approvals, and their capacities total approximately 1.6GW. Most recently, the company got underway with applications for its Jewakwa River and Scar Creek schemes, which would have capacities totalling 155MW.
