Power sector reforms deferred until Afourer completion

14 November 2000

Morocco’s Minister of Energy and Mining has said that the country will consider a gradual liberalisation of its power sector beginning in 2003, after the 450MW Afourer pumped storage plant is completed.

The plant, in the town of Afourer, is being constructed by a consortium led by alstom of France, at a cost of about US$123M.

Meanwhile, Canada’s Hydro- Quebec has signed a co- operation agreement with the Ministry of Energy and Water of Morocco to focus on hydraulic and hydroelectric power projects, especially water barrages.
