Salma project inaugurated in Afghanistan

7 June 2016

The 42MW Salma dam in Afghanistan's western Herat province, a project carried out in a development partnership with India, has been inaugurated.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani officially started the turbines at the project in a ceremony on 4 June.

Known as the 'Afghan-India friendship dam', the $290 million project is the first large scale energy project funded by India in the country. It was originally envisaged back in the 1970's, but construction had been halted by decades of fighting.
