South American hydro assignment

10 April 2001

The organisation is working with the Guatemalan energy industry on energy policy and recommendations to an incentives law for renewable energy investment. Delegates will network with potential local industry partners and meet with top energy policy makers, including the energy ministry, the regulatory agency Comission Nacional de Energia and members of the congressional energy commission. In Honduras, participants will also be able to meet key players in both the public and private sector.

The visits follow a recent three-day workshop on creating a renewable energy law in the Dominican Republic. This invitation came from the country’s Congressional Energy Commission. The main purpose of this law is to decrease dependency on imported fuels and utilise indigenous energy sources.

Future visits are planned for Nepal and Brazil.

US Hydropower is also continuing its policy task force work in india. Larger projects continue to progress slowly but several smaller projects in Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh are expected to close during the second quarter of 2001.
