The Malaysian government is continuing with plans to resurrect the troubled Bakun dam and hydro development in Sarawak. If revived, the Bakun project - shelved in 1998 because of the Asian currency crisis - will be entirely funded by the Malaysian government and developed to its original capacity of 2400MW.
"There has been some attempt to get the project back on track but so far there are no companies on board. It is still at the screening stage," said Dr Muller, an engineer at the consultancy firm lahmeyer. "As far as we know the design returned to its original 2400MW as this is the most reasonable capacity for its situation. Reducing the output of the scheme would not reduce its area requirement," he added.
