Update on Birecik

13 April 1999

Working on a tight 60-month schedule, with 24 months scheduled for the main concrete works, construction at Turkey’s Birecik dam proceeds apace. The venture will be Turkey’s first ‘build, operate, transfer’ project, and it is being funded by some DM2.3B in export credits, loans and equity investment. When complete, the project will comprise a 62.5m high concrete gravity dam, located between 2.5km long earth embankment dams. It will house six Francis turbines each rated at 112MW, and have a reservoir that will irrigate some 70,000ha of farmland.

Civil works are being carried out by a joint venture of Germany’s Philipp Holzmann, Turkey’s Gama Industrie and strabag Austria. Formwork, including that shown opposite, was supplied by Doka.
