US investment in Indian hydro

16 November 2001

US HYDROPOWER VISITED India on 6-18 September 2001 to meet with US government counterparts and the private sector, and to participate in a national hydro power summit in Delhi.

The trade organisation has been engaged with the private sector and Indian policymakers to stimulate and ensure investments made by US companies in the country.

Thirty-one projects involving US businesses are in the pipeline, with several hydro power projects expected to reach financial closure over the coming months.

Meanwhile, the Gerusoppa Sharavathi hydroelectric project in India has reached its final stages.

The 500m long dam, expected to be completed shortly across the Sharavathi river in Gerusoppa, will reuse the water flowing from Lingamakki and Jog Falls power houses. Power will be generated utilising four turbine units of 60MW each.
